were explained and the necessity for their adoption emphasised. Finally, the whole scheme was embodied in a printed circular (see related object, circular) and supplied to each weaver on Saturday Apl 16/04.
The first experiment was tried in the old mixing room where the last 6 looms at the Engine house end were brought together in the manner already described. This was shortly followed by the whole room and the one below it being so arranged. On May 12th the new arrangement was introduced into the two large shops No 1 & 2 (Burgess & Venables) and the others followed as quickly as practicable. The last was the narrow cellar where are the oldest looms. The whole change occupied about 3 months in its introduction.
Some difficulty presented itself in adjusting the scale of deductions owing to the very different qualities of looms working. Finally it was settled on the following basis, viz - 1/- per loom per week from 6 loom weavers on new looms, 8d per loom per week from 4 loom weavers on new looms, and 6d. from old looms whether, 4, 3 or 2. 9d. per loom from 6 loom weavers on old looms.
Here are reproduced a number of extracts from the book, the original is available for consultation by appointment with the QBM Museum Curator.
