| Description | Manuscript of Edwin Butterworth (1812-48) , who historian Mike Winstanley has called "Lancashire's forgotten historian." Butterworth was born in Oldham in 1812, the youngest of 10 children and son of James Butterworth (we have reproduced James' Antiquities of the Town and a Complete History of the Trade of Manchester - see below). He wrote widely on Oldham and was particularly interested in the cotton industry, and his diaries and notebooks record social unrest in Oldham - particularly between the Irish and the English, but also industrial unrest in the area, as is seen from the following reports. Butterworth was an amazingly prolific and perceptive historianand social observer, and in his short and quite tragic life, he had been a newspaper reporter, mapmaker and was also the first Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths at Chadderton.
Our selection here, drawn from Oldham Local Studies and Archives' holdings, show Butterworth's observations on, amongst other things, Factory Bill agitation, industrial accidents in the early Oldham cotton industry, but the main item is a mass strike of 4000 cotton operatives in Oldham, which gave rise to much unrest and suffering in the town. |
