| Title | "The awakening of the weaver." |

| Creator | Fitton, Sam

 |
| Description | Cartoon appearing in the Cotton Factory Times, Jan 29 1911, depicting weavers asserting their rights against employers. Weavers were fined if their work was deemed sub-standard by management, thus paying for losses that the cotton company might have been expected to absorb. The shuttle asking for a kiss refers to the unhygenic habit of "shuttle kissing", where weavers sucked the thread of a new cop through the eye of the shuttle so that weaving could begin, hence the weary weaver telling the shuttle that "as for thee ... I'd rayther kiss a gradely mon." 'Gradely' was a Lancsahire word beloved by Fitton and basically meant 'great' or 'fine'. |
