In the fourth of our special reports from the Lancashire cotton districts a Bolton cotton worker speaking in 1994 tells of the use of "pauper" and orphaned children in the cotton mills:"... And when you write your book, don't forget to mention all those poor children who were strapped to machines twenty four hours a day will you? That's what the employers did; they got orphans and that and made them work for their keep. If you want to know the history of the mills well that's what its all about, having bits of kids slave away. It was before my time that was, but a lot of those I worked with could remember it - that's the history of the mills. Don't forget to mention that will you? |
