Health & Diet Learning Journey Step 6: Food is Medicine!
Feeling under the weather and can't afford the doctor? Try nutritious and easy to digest food and drinks from an original Victorian selection for invalids.

Beverages
Barley Water - 2 oz pearl barley, 2-3 lumps of sugar, rind of ½ a small lemon soaked in 1 pint boiling water and strained - a nutritious and agreeable drink!

Blackcurrant Tea - 1 dessertspoon blackcurrant jam, 1 dessertspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon castor sugar dissolved in ½ pint boiling water, left to stand for 15 - 20 minutes by the fire then strained ready to drink - good for colds, thirst or hoarseness.

Egg Nog - 1 tablespoon sherry or brandy, 1 tablespoon of cream, 1 tablespoon hot or cold water mixed well in a tumbler stirred with a whisked white of egg - will do everyone good to try one of these!

Liquid Foods
Beef Tea - 1lb of gravy beef , 1 pint of water and ½ teaspoon salt cooked in an earthenware jar in a slow oven for 3 hours then strained - a nourishing pick me up!

Meat Dishes
Calf's foot gently stewed with onion, parsley, cloves and mace then stirred into a cream sauce with parsley garnish.

Bread and Milk
